Great Sand Dunes

6:30 am - Our walk to the dunes

We woke up early Sunday morning by accident. Immediately we set out on a walk from the campsite down to the dunes. We heard birds, saw interesting wildlife, walked barefoot in the sand, and got to watch the sun rise up over the Sangre de Cristo mountains onto the dunes. It was a wonderful way to wake up (reminded me of desert living in the wilds of Arizona or early-rising at sleep away camp in the Catskills) and oh-so much fun!

Summer excursion

6:30 am - Sun rising up over the Sangre de Cristo mountains onto the dunes

David and I went on a holiday this weekend to the Great Sand Dunes. It was relaxing and fun and interesting and so inspiring. We loved having time alone together, being out in nature, enjoying an east coast style rain storm, and walking on the dunes, in the creek... feeling as if we were at the beach.

Spring Break Trip: Agave

A closeup of Harry's giant agave plant.

It's plants like these that I especially miss out here in Colorado. First of all, I love the colors and textures of agaves. I feel amazed by how little water a sturdy plant like this requires... and feel awed by how huge they grow. Totally love 'em.

Spring Break Trip: Time for a close up

We stumbled upon this interesting tree during our walk along the Catwalks in the Gila wilderness.

Lots going on with us up in Colorado: our wedding is quickly approaching, work is keeping me very busy, and David finishes up the semester in three weeks.

Boulder is lush, green, and flowering. We've been busy gardening out back and spending lots of time with friends. We even bought patio furniture!

We're also working out several times a week at the CU Rec Center (with friends). Next project: Carrie learns to play racquetball!

Spring Break Trip: In the backyard

Our friend Harry has the most interesting backyard (the inside of his fabulous house can be seen here). The outside of his studio, above, is a cleaver mix of textures and colors. I loved how the tree blossoms pulled out the pink around the rivets in the metal wall.

To visit Harry online and learn about his "What's a Pot Shop" living space and gallery, visit his webpage.

Spring Break Trip: Along the trail in our desert

We had a fantastic spring break in New Mexico with Judy, Eric, and Chase Holdener! We visited with our families, saw lots of friends, and visited all sorts of new and interesting places.

I took over 300 pictures last week, so expect lots of pictures from our trip coming your way!

This photograph is from a walk that David and I took with his parents' dogs Ursa and Oso (both meaning "bear"); they loved running around without leashes on and chasing birds and peeing absolutely everywhere. We loved being home in our desert. The yucca front and center is taller than I am. There was a strong breeze and clouds kept blowing in. The mucky water behind the yucca was a surprise for us as well as the dogs (who proceeded to take big drinks and get all muddy). That's one thing I love about the desert: surprises everywhere you turn!

There and back again

Today it was sunny and warm... and then all of sudden it was snowy and cold.... and then it was sunny and warm again! Ah, Colorado.

First sign of spring

Here in Boulder it's been in the 60s and sunny. Here is a reminder that spring is around the corner. (Boy, these buds could be fooled; I predict we'll have at least one more snow storm!)

Jade effect

I tried to make this look like I was using a toy camera. Right now I am thinking about getting a Polaroid Holga and am oh-so-excited.

So, this is the jade plant in our bathroom. Plants, plants, all around!

My first posted pet shot.

This is Oso, David's parents dog, looking up at me clearly thinking, "What are you doing?!" He is an attention whore and just loves petting and cuddling and sitting on top of you. Together, he and Ursa (the other Leyba dog; their names both mean "bear") like to run around the Gild wilderness without their leashes, chase jackrabbits, take down skunks, and bark at dogs (and horses) on the tv. They are very cute and we miss them.

Dried Flowers II

Some crispy, brown flowers that I stumbled upon during a lunch break walk last month. Since then, it's snowed and snowed up at work. I bet that these flowers have long been buried in white fluff.

Beautiful Boulder

A view of the countryside from outside of the Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory. We took Alice for a tour there during her visit. When we visited the mint room, I felt as though I died and went to heaven. I really think that I need to go there weekly to clear out my sinuses and have that feel-so-refreshed feeling. Either that, or designate a room in our house to be filled with mint. Obviously, only one of those options is realistic. Thank goodness we live five minutes from Celestial Seasonings!

More Gila wilderness

This is the view from the site where Melanie and Jeff were married. Soon they will construct their main house here---built of straw bales and adobe.

Other photos of their property: a wall made with bottles, driftwood above the entry to their house, aproaching their cob house, and a view near their orchard.

Every time I travel, I return home to tulips. And every single time, I am surprised because I've forgotten about his ritual. David amazes me daily!

These red tulips greeting me on the 2nd when I returned from my trip to New Jersey for Jane and Paul's wedding.

David is now in Texas at a conference and I am the one at home. Should I buy him flowers for his return or start my own ritual? Any ideas?
